The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – Antibiotic, Antibiotic Resistance and Superbugs – 12 Septembre
Please Register HERE for the event!
On Thursday 12 September, we will have the first casual French Lab meeting: AFTER LAB!
On this occasion, Wilfried Moreira, Director for Research and Principal Investigator – Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), Antimicrobial Resistance Interdisciplinary Research Group (AMR IRG) will talk about his work.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rising globally and will probably constitute one of the biggest public health crisis moving forward this century. AMR is currently responsible for almost one million deaths annually and this number could reach ten million by 2050. In Singapore, up to 50% of infections contacted in hospitals are resistant to antibiotics. Bacteria have developed very clever tricks to resist antibiotics and these tricks are intrinsically linked to the way antibiotics exert their antibacterial actions. But how do antibiotics actually kill bacteria and what can we do with the understanding of these killing mechanisms? How have bacteria evolved to resist antibiotics actions? What can we do about it? This presentation will cover some of the basics of an otherwise complex and multifactorial problem and discuss some of the novel approaches and strategies taken to tackle a pressing and concerning issue
Wilfried is currently a Principal Investigator and the Director for Research of the Antimicrobial Resistance Interdisciplinary Research Group (AMR IRG) at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) centre. His group uses various approaches including system and molecular biology to identify novel resistance pathways in pathogenic bacteria. Before joining SMART, he led drug discovery projects targeting M. tuberculosis in the department of Microbiology and Immunology at the National University of Singapore and the SPRINT-TB program
We will meet at the Good Beer Company (MRT Kent Ridge) at 6.30pm, with beers from all over the world for us to taste!
Wilfried Moreira will give his speech at 7pm!
